2020 was the year of WeekNotes. 2021 was MonthNotes. 2022 is all about the FortNotes.

In the interests of experimentation and finding the right balance, I’m keen to give fortnightly notes, aka FortNotes, a go. WeekNotes were very regular but demanding with some quiet weeks feeling pointless. MonthNotes allowed for more flexibility but got quite long and difficult to remember the detail. Fortnightly might find the right balance. (I’m also hoping Matt Asbury joins me on this venture following a brief chat about them)

Life

  • Fun family day out at Legoland before returning to school and work
  • Bought a Smart ForFour from Cinch but had immediate diagnostics problems reported
  • Sold Mini Coops within 3 hours of posting on Marketplace
  • Joined Vinylbox with £15 voucher to see what turns up from the Ibiza collection
  • Joined Simply Cook for some new recipes to try in 2022
  • Trip to Bicester Village for some browsing with the family and spot of lunch at Cafe Wolsley

Work

  • Tired of saying “Happy New Year” for the past 2 weeks
  • #ProTip: cancel any recurring meetings after a festive break as nobody has any progress updates
  • Inherited 5 more direct reports from a leaving EM colleague and started getting to know them directly
  • Triaged engineer mentor feedback through EM+LSE+Eng 1:1:1’s (before the LSE’s departure)
  • Slow pipeline of new recruits with new “TAG” model, only one phone screen in 2 weeks
  • Had a quiet day in London to talk through some DEI initiative topics and actions, along with a much-needed PT session
  • Got the Podcast Champs to brainstorm and agree some initial tech topics to cover and started procuring all the tools & equipment
  • Enjoyed seeing Alastair’s #LightningTalk of a Blazor app for internal tooling
